Why you should be collagen banking.

Have you heard of this new trend?

Have you heard of collagen banking? Basically it means increasing your collagen reserves, and is considered a preventative approach to ageing. As we get older our skin loses collagen and elastin due to the natural ageing process, plus lifestyle factors. This leads to a loss of elasticity increasing crepiness and sagging skin.

Our collagen levels start to deplete at around the age of 30. We will start to notice the signs of ageing as a result, fine lines and wrinkles, crepey or loose skin and larger pore size. If you want to prevent the signs of ageing then you should consider collagen banking, to slow down the depletion of your collagen stores. Here are some top tips to avoid accelerating this process even more.

  1. Avoid collagen depleting lifestyle habits such as UV exposure, smoking and poor diet choices.

  2. Seek out collagen stimulating treatments such as micro needling, RF micro needling, Profhilo, Polyneucleotides and LED light therapy.

  3. Adopt a good skincare routine that focusses on protecting the skin from UV and environmental damage. Photo-ageing (UV damage) is the most common cause of premature skin ageing and photo aged skin was found to have significantly reduced collagen depletion, so protection is key.

  4. Start using Retinoids. The gold standard retinoid is Tretinoin, this requires a prescription. Tretinoin binds to Retinoic Acid receptors in the skin which increases cell turnover, exfoliates the skin and induces new collagen formation. As Tretinoin is the active ingredient, it works much quicker than Retinol or Retinal but can be associated with more dryness and irritation in the early stages of using.
